Traditional Stone Fireplaces

No 1. The Holly

This design was an adaptation of The Hammond. To suit the size of the customer's home it needed to be enlarged. The customers had a couple of personal preferences for adjustments to enable the surround to be better suited to their Victorian property..

The first was to change the flat arch into a semi circular arch, which was more in keeping with the design of their house. The second was to construct a kerb in the upper hearth to prevent coals from rolling onto the carpet, as the idea of an open coal fire was to warm the fabric of the house, which tended to take a while to heat due to it's size.

The house was constructed out of brick with Stone window surrounds. The stone we created the fireplace from was in keeping with the stone originally used in the construction of the house. The customers had spent time looking into the Victorian period and found original Stone surrounds of the period in architectural antique salvage yards, but found they had extremely high price tags and were usually in need of repair.

Removal of the 1950's tiled fire surround and replacement with a Natural Stone fire surround that could have been mistaken as having been constructed with the house was the main objective of this venture. The customers and Stone Essentials liaised until all the specifications were met and a suitable design was fashioned.
