No 4. The Spandrels - Double action Mold

This surround is similar to The Thorn design but with the added detail of the double action mold.

The mold on the legs is almost identical, with the exception of when it reaches the lintel. Here it divides to enable dropped spandrels to be carved into the lintel.

Half of the mold follows the shape of the arch, the second half of the mold is carried up to form a right angle. This creates a diverse look with crisp, straight lines combined with the softness of the arch and added depth with the aid of the spandrels.

The depth of the mantle relates closely to the depth of the stone to provide an adequate yet elegant size for those mantelpiece items.
